BNEF WORKSHOP 2: From Legacy Waste to Final Disposal: Practical Lessons from Lithuania’s Radioactive Waste Management Programme

This two‑hour workshop will provide a practical, experience-based overview of Lithuania’s radioactive waste management programme implemented at the Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant (INPP) by ALTRA. Participants will gain insights into the entire waste management chain — from sorting and characterization to treatment, conditioning, interim storage, and final disposal.

The workshop will highlight real project experience, including the development of the very low level radioactive waste landfill repository and the near-surface repository for short-lived low and intermediate level radioactive waste, ensuring safe disposal in line with international safety standards.

This session will be particularly valuable for future operators, regulatory authorities, waste management organizations, and technology developers seeking proven and optimized approaches to safe, efficient, and compliant long-term waste management. Our experts will share key lessons learned from implementing complex decommissioning-related waste management tasks and preparing the necessary infrastructure.
